Bruno Sammartino lashes out at the state of wrestling today in an AP story today. Sammartino says he turned down a recent invitation to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame saying, "I've completely divorced myself from the wrestling world. I don't believe in it."
Commenting further, "I would wonder where my principles are if I accepted (the WWE's invitation)," Sammartino said. "Anyway, their hall of fame is a joke."
Sammartino says in the AP story he stopped watching wrestling completely when he saw Stone Cold Steve Austin drinking beer on television.
According to the AP story, Superstar Billy Graham tried unsuccessfully to talk Sammartino into accepting induction to the Hall of Fame. Graham was quoted as saying, "All the wrestling fans want him in, but the hall of fame doesn't mean anything to him."

When Bruno was in his prime professional wrestling, though still a "work" did resemble a legit sport to a certain degree, but over the years the WWF/E has degenerated into the "sports entertainment" drivel we see today. As a highly respected former world champion from the days when titles meant something Bruno probably feels that associating with a company that produces storylines based on necrophilia, racism and lots of T&A (amongst other things) instead of 2 people getting it on in the ring is beneath him. And I don't blame him one bit.

You know I totally agree with Bruno. I have hated wrestling since all the "attitude" era crap. But I would of loved seeing him inducted into the Hall of Fame.

I heard that they asked Bruno Sammartino and Bob Backlund last year, and they both declined then too. I must say, I'm a big fan of the hall of fame, but I have to agree with Bruno. For someone who's been so vocal against WWE for so many years to accept a place in their hall of fame would be almost farcical. Almost as farcical as having Baron Scicluna in it. (Yes I think Baron Scicluna is the least deserving of it. Moreso than Pete Rose)

The only reason the WWE got ratings was the shock value and that has died out. Anyways compared to the ratings from the 80', the Attitude era couldnt even come close to it. Saturday Nights Main Event, which didnt air but 2 to 3 months at a time, had ratings about 10.0 and RAW during the 90's never passed over 5.0. I say the 90's were the worst time for WWE and certainly right now its not doing great. Hell PPVs did way better back then cause the market wasnt oversaturated like it is today. Maybe if Vince goes back to Kayfabe, quit with the Vulgar launguage,T&A,Diva search, and cuts back on PPVs and main event matches on TV and saves them for one of the Big 4 (Survivor,Rumble,Mania, Summerslam) the ratings will go up and people will actually start watching

I'm not totally against "sports entertainment" and though I didn't see it originally because I stopped watching wrestling for about 5 years,a lot of what I have seen on video or DVD and also read about the Attitude era looked intresting (Austin Vs McMahon for example) but it seems since that era has passed the WWE have concentrated too much on the entertainment stuff and less and less on the in ring product which can't be good when you stilll have the word "wrestling" as part of your company name. It must be frustrating for wrestlers who are having a hard time getting any kind of push to see their chances become even less because a big chunk of TV time is eaten up with either Triple H ranting about being "the best wrestler alive today" with Flair kissing his butt in the background or a load of silicone enhanced bimbos prancing around in next to nothing in an alleged "Diva Search".
